Interior colour schemes for summer 2024

There are different types of keen home stylists. There’s the ones that change their accessories in line with current fashions, those that switch looks with every season and those who only open a tin of paint when their walls desperately need a fresh coat.

Whichever one is you, knowing what theme to pick can be an overwhelming process. Thankfully, there are experts on hand to identify which styles are having their moment and might look good in your home. We’ve brought together the top 5 current trends to help you narrow down your choice.

Pastels: sitting at the lightest end of the colour spectrum are pastels, and these soft shades are cropping up in homeware sections across the country. Inspiration is being drawn from food and flowers – think sugared almonds, palest lemon, mint green, rose pink and lavender. Pastels are neutral enough for entire rooms to be painted in these colours but if you’re worried the look will be too sickly, opt for pastel accessories – lampshades, vases, cushion covers and coloured candles.

Coastal blues: it’s only natural to think of sandy beaches and crystal clear waters as soon as there’s a hint of summer in the air. Even if you live inland, it’s easy to bring coastal charm into your home. The key is to combine shades of blue with crisp white. A trio of dark, mid and light blues picked out in fabrics, accessories and paint, will replicate the colours of the sea in a smart but soothing way.

Gold: out of all the metallics, gold is the softest and warmest. These qualities make it ideal for rooms that can feel cold and dark. Infuse a room with luxury by choosing gold picture frames and lamp bases, opting for fabric woven with gold thread, painting in a rich shade of ochre or using wallpaper with a golden metallic shimmer.

Citrus: zesty shades are a great choice for warmer months but their potency means they may be too overwhelming if applied to every wall. Instead, opt for a neutral background – soft white is a good choice – and add pops of colour with accessories and fabrics. Hints of lemon, lime and tangerine are naturally uplifting shades that work well in bedrooms, kitchens and studies.

Soft greens: one trend that is so good that it persists season after season is botanical. If you’re not a fan of bold tropical prints, you can still add vibrancy with verdant shades. Draw inspiration from the complementary tones found in nature and use these as solid colours. A sage green linen throw and pile of fern-coloured cushions would look elegant against white bedlinen, while a plain bathroom can be elevated by a stack of moss-green, fluffy towels.

Refreshing your home’s style is a good way to prepare a property before it goes on the market. If you would like advice about how to get your home ready ahead of a sale, please contact our team.

Earlier this year, it became apparent that home buyers aren’t that fussed about finding the ‘perfect’ property. A Rightmove survey of 34,000 home movers found 73% of those leaving rented accommodation viewed fixer uppers as a more affordable route to property ownership. Additionally, 73% of existing homeowners wanted to buy a property that needed work in order to create their dream home.
